Ankle Sprains

Pain and swelling around the ankle following involuntary twisting of the foot. Sprains can range from a simple stretching of the tendons and ligaments to a complete rupture.

Ankle Sprains are a common cause of foot pain usually caused by a sudden twisting action of the foot and ankle. This may occur during sports, stepping off a kerb and walking on unstable surfaces such as sand. The pain associated with a sprain is caused by the sudden strain and stretch on the ligaments and tendons that lie around the area, occasionally a tear or rupture may occur. The most common type of ankle sprain is an inversion ankle sprain because there are fewer ligaments supporting the outside ankle. An inversion sprain is when the foot rolls so that the whole sole of the foot is facing inward, over stretching the structures on the outer ankle.

If an ankle sprain does occur R.I.C.E (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is recommended prior to seeing a medical professional. Formthotics™ can also help by supporting your foot to encourage optimal alignment and function; this will help offload damaged tissue. If pain and swelling persists longer than a few days and you are unable to walk properly we recommend you contact a podiatrist or sports physician immediately.
