Knee Pain
Pain in your knee area, often worse when walking up or down stairs or hills, or after sitting for long periods.
The most common knee pain is found at the front of the knee, either under the knee cap at the area of the patella tendon or under the knee cap itself. This is often caused by the knee cap being pulled in an abnormal direction leading to strain of the patella tendon and excessive rubbing of the underside of the patella on the femur (thigh bone). This problem may occur due to muscle imbalance, poor foot and leg alignment, poor footwear and incorrect training technique.
Pain will often be present during or following activity especially if it involves stairs or hills, sometimes also following sitting with the knee flexed for long periods of time. Knee pain can also occur on the inside or outside areas of your knee or even behind the knee.
Your podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis of your knee pain and provide relevant treatment and advice which may include strapping, activity modification, strengthening, Formthotics™ and footwear advice. Formthotics™can help by ensuring optimal foot and leg alignment. This reduces the angle the patella and patella tendon are being pulled and decreases the knee pain.
