Putting Formthotics™ to the test: Dave Murphy – a walking journey through the Appalachian trail

17 June 2014 - posted by Formthotics HQ

Dave Murphy is walking the Appalachian trail over 4.5 months, walking approximately 40 kilometers per day and reaching a total of approximately 3500 kilometers. Known as the ‘grandfather of long distance trails’, the walk travels through 14 states across America. Dave started his walk in March at Springer mountain, Georgia, and will finish in Mt Katahdin, Maine in the middle of July 2014.

Dave has been fitted with Formthotics by podiatrist, Leslie Marsh in Christchurch. From his previous two major walks, Dave has calculated that his Formthotics have optimal use for around 1600 kilometers – at which point he will place a new pair in for the remaining distance.

“Formthotics are a lighter orthotic which means I can walk faster”, shares Dave. As there is little to no time to rest, the management of foot related issues is critical.

So far Dave has needed a root canal operation and probably experienced some good aches and pains. We wish Dave luck for the remainder of his journey.
