Foot Pain and Cycling: a survey of frequency, type, location, associations and amelioration of foot pain.

"This paper highlights the incidence of foot pain amongst cyclists- almost 54% within the study cohort. Pain descriptions are not surprising; most at the forefoot and are described as burning and tingling, relieved by removal of the shoe. The incidence of this symptom was highest among users of cleated (fixed) shoe-pedal systems, which is also consistent- these cyclists will spend more time on the bike and at higher levels of intensity when compared to those who do not use these systems. From our perspective, this might be a modifiable occurence, though adding an insole to a cycling shoe is problematic due to the low volume construct of the shoes. Sizing up is probably the only way to successfully introduce an orthosis to solve this problem. " - Dr Bob Eckles
