  5. Are Prefabricated Foot Orthoses Still Effective

Background

Foot problems are highly prevalent in older people, and prefabricated (‘off-the-shelf’) foot orthoses are frequently prescribed in this age-group. However, such devices are susceptible to material compression and deformation, which may reduce their effectiveness over time. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the difference in plantar pressures between prefabricated orthoses worn for at least 12 months to new prefabricated orthoses in older people.

"A one of a kind article which assessed the functional parameters of a well-worn (12 mos) pair of formthotics against new. Looking solely at plantar pressures, it was determined that there was "only limited deformation" at that time point. This result was seen in people >65y and these were not therefore, individuals who would (likely) physically stress the device in ways that younger people may do when engaging sport or other vigorous activity." - Dr Bob Eckles
